Message Board Topic: Stolen Spirits

Some indigenous peoples believe that if you take their photograph you will “steal their spirit.” Their name and their image are so interconnected to their identity, that they are actually one in the same. This means if you say or know their name you have a certain amount power over them. And if you take their image you have even more power over them.

How much do you think your image is tied to who you are or how you define your identity?

Why do you think these people feel this way about their image?

Are there similarities to how we feel about our own personal image?

  1. Images are tied to who you are by the way you take them, produce them, post edit them, the combinations are endless. No one's pictures are exactly the same. This makes everyones pictures unique and impossible to reproduce. This is important because the style of your photography, ultimately makes you, who you are. This develops your identity as an artist, someonething that no one else can ever copy. I think people feel so closely to their art because of the connections they have with it. They were there taking that photo, at that specific time, at that specific place. They dont dont people to steal that from them, because what does it leave them with; nothing. i think everyone feels that way about their photos. They dont want people taking their photos because their art is what makes their identity. Photos are who we are, and what makes us who we are.

  2. thats bull!!!!
i know people that have like 1,000 pictures of them and they don't look dead or anything
i don't have any problems with people taking pictures of me or knowing my name, native americans have many beliefs so i think we should respect their beliefs, i think it's ok for anyone else to take pictures of people who don't have this belief

  3. I do not personally agree with this whole idea. I mean sure you may be able to tell a lot about a person by the way they look, but I do not necessarily think that it can define you are determine your personality. These people are obviously big believers in this whole idea. Since I am so against it, I have a hard time connecting with them; therefore, I am not sure why they feel this way. These particular people care very much about their picture being taken, as do a lot of us. It is just for different reasons that can I guess be connected in a way. A lot of us do not like our picture to be taken because we fear how we will be portrayed to everyone else. We do not want to look bad because since everyone in this world seems to be so judgmental, we don’t want to be judged in a negative way. In a way I guess if one person has an embarrassing image of another person hey could use that as power over another person depending on how much they care about what everyone else would think.

  4. My image is kinda tied to who i am but not to much. i more believe in the idea of you cant judge a book by its cover. i was raised or brought up with this idea, just as some were raised to believe in the spirit thing.

  5. I think that a image has a lot to do with your personality because there image that you want to capture in your camera is a picture in your mind. This all revolves around your own style and your over all thought of what a picture really is. Any kind of art work hat you do is ultimately your own and is taken in your own artist manner. Many people feel that this is why, because this I something that could be one of to the artist because how many people will really capture that same exact image. It pretty much like taking candy from a baby, they will get made its something of theirs they like, and take pride in. this in general revolves around the same stuff you don’t want anyone to take your own stuff, something that you take personal you wouldn’t want anyone stealing from you.

  6. I don’t believe that your image or your name defines who you are. It’s very shallow to think that. If you look in the hallways of this school, you see that all the social clichés are lost. Everything is mixed up. For the most part, yes, popular girls wear Abercrombie and stick together, but you never know someone by their name or how they dress. Just because you dress in all black doesn’t mean you’re depressing, just like if you just wear Abercrombie, you’re preppy and snotty. They probably feel this way because it’s somewhat of an urban legend in their society and it’s been passed down to be believed as truth. We do tend to stereotype based on what people look like, but that has been instilled in us by society, much like the indigenous people are swayed by their ancient culture.
