Many analysts, sociologists and news writers argue that the modern day audience seeks a narrative. This means that news, information, education, politics and other areas of contemporary life require a story – the audience needs to be entertained in order to understand and learn. The audience needs characters that fulfill stereotypes like the underdog, the patriot, the good guy, the bad guy etc. The audience needs a plot – like a political race, where two people struggle to rise to the top. And the audience will only pay attention for as long as they are entertained. Some say that modern life, modern education and modern information systems have become a soap opera.
What does this mean for information or education? What does this mean for art? What does this mean for society?
How has the movie industry affected contemporary life? Are we moving into a soap opera orientated world?
i dont think this is completely true, even though some people can only pay attention when they are being entertained and most of the time it is because there is a storyline. there aresome people who enjoy many things without the need of a storyline or plot, ex. mathematicians study math but it is very rare that they use a plot to make their work more interesting. i believe it depends in who the audience is. i personally like plots and storylines, but i also often enjoy raw information straight from the books
ReplyDeleteWhat this means for information and education is that it's going to be a lot harder for teachers and reporters to keep us (the audience) entertained. This is going to be a struggle, because they should be focusing on informing and teaching us, and now they have to think out of their environment of how to entertain us with all that as well. This is something that i dont think will end up well. I think in terms of art, people are going to have to find or create, new forms of art to keep up with societies interests. Also to keep them entertained with their work, they need to conform with society too. This is something that i also do not think is a good idea because artists should be able to do whatever kinds of work they want. Art is about being different. Movie industries have kind of changed out society, in a sense that we all feel like our lives have to be like a movie, or a certain movie we have seen. Some peoples actions are based on movies they've seen, which in most cases is a bad thing. I dont know if our world is going so far as to become as dramatic as a soap opera, but we're definitely more complicated in a sense that we feel like we always need to be entertained.
ReplyDeleteI think that the world is slowly falling into a soap opera. There is no way to stop it, stupid people keep it going and the majority of our population is stupid people. This means people will someday go to school to be educated about what happened in the history of the bachelor, or who Steve fell in love with in their favorite drama. There will be no need for books all of these shows are on television, people will leave books in the past and gain no knowledge. Of course we need workers, robots will be built to keep the factories running, keep drilling the oil, and keep food being produced. Art will die with knowledge; with television why look at a still 2-demensional picture when you could be finding out who really loves who on channel 5. As for society there is no way it can continue without people; they will confine themselves to their homes, gaining weight and falling deeper and deeper into the soap opera trance that will one day encompass the whole globe.
ReplyDeleteI think that this a good example of what people want because to this day many people want something to catch their eye so that they are in tone. To this day art needs to have some kind of catch to it that catches the teenage eye so it will set a trend for them all. Movies effect a lot of things such as what if that happened to me, or it makes you feel like you are in the setting of the movie. A lot of the modern day movies are getting so high tech that there is three D and what not making you feel like your apart of it more than just watching it. Also there is a lot more emotions put into it making you what the character is actually feeling more then anything.
ReplyDeleteinformation and education i think will suffer greatly from this because turning actual facts into an interesting story is highly difficult. art will also suffer greatly as people lose their imagination because they can't make up a story of their own and will be upset for there to be no resolution to the story you created. yes art has feeling but it's the person veiwing the piece that decides the feeling. society will eventually fail, we will soon run oout of resources because everyone will be to bored to learn anything new so they'll continue going through the same stories everyday. movies have effected this by continuously showing us a story and at times trying to include knowledge. yes i think society is sslowly becoming soap opera oriented.
