Message Board Topic: Motivation

In lieu of the last few weeks, we have discussed and participated in various activities which promote the monetary aspect of commercial art. Artists often struggle with a balance of making money and being free and creative. Studies have shown across all careers (not just the arts) that people work for two reasons: 1) the monetary reward and 2) encouragement/praise and recognition.

What motivates you? What is a stronger factor in your life; reward or praise? What about your art?

  1. What motivates me is the praise of knowing that other people besides myself, take pride in my work. Praise is a strong factor in life, because it's what motivates everyone (in my opinion) to keep on doing their work. When you know people are interested in what you do, it makes you want to continue doing it. Reward though, after praise, is something that i think is very important. Being rewarded for your work allows you to fund future projects that people may like even more. Reward is also a symbol of motivation because of the realization that people will actually pay their own money, to have some art (or anything else) made by you.

  2. I think i would want to do what i like and I think making myself a better photographer would probably be my number one task, but i couldn't afford to do all of that work if the money was not good, so i see why people would want to make decent money while keeping the artist freedom.

  3. The stronger factor in my life is reward. not neccessarily money but in the instance of being a vet it would be the reward of helping animals, however in my art work it would be praise i like when people say i did a great job on my photos or drawings cause i normally try hard when my projects turn out really good.

  4. Praise is definitely more of a factor in my life than reward. It's much more important to me that people appreciate me emotionally, and they don't have to show that appreciation with money - I'd rather they do it by just being my friend. With my art, it's the same. Like anyone else, I like it when people compliment my art. I know this isn't a very humble approach, but it's the truth. I know that I'm capable, but I like it when other people remind me of my capabilities.

  5. i think the thing that motivates me is when i am want to acheve somthing then im going to push myself to get what i want. or if i got a good idea i will want to make somthing like it that looks kewl or has some kind of good aspect to it that will motivate me to make or desgn somthing that i will like even more. i think that a strong factoe in my life is my hockey career and my parents always twelling me to put my mind to it. also to try my best and if i fail do it over agian and maybe next time it will be even better then the first time and ill be sucessfull.

  7. The thing that motivates me more is the self praise. When i accomplish something, i feel good about myself. But not so much feel good, i feel proud and happy that i finished what i started. Whenever i finish something i just like to look at it for a while and see what i could do to make it better. I'm a perfectionist, not that much with photography, but when i make things from scratch. Especially when i make things for other people, i like seeing their faces when i give it to them.
