Message Board: Complementarity

When creating a portfolio there are several key things to consider: 1) theme, 2) breadth and 3) organization. In other words, examine the relationship between unity and variety. These two words often seem to contradict one another. There is a term called complementarity which is rather complex but relates to the idea of contradictions. It states that everything has a little bit of its opposite within it. The classic example of this is the colors of green and red. These colors are opposite. But everything that is green has a little bit of red. And everything that is red has a little bit of green. The reason we can’t see the opposite color is because one of them dominates – one of them is so intense that it drowns out the other.

What are some ways in which you can show both unity and variety?

How do you cope with this contradiction? Think about the green and red example – how can this serve as a metaphor for unity and variety?

Can you think of examples from other genres or disciplines, like complementarity?

  1. You can have variety in the subject of your photo, and unity in the editing style. or the opposite. i dont think its that difficult once you understand what you need to do.

  2. To show unity and variety you can edit the photos in the same style but different subjects in the photos or flip flop that. I think unity and variety is different from the green and red example because you can tell the difference in a photo between unity and variety.

  3. With unity and variety, you can maybe make them in the same color range for the unity, and then a different variety of how/where the pictures are taken. If it makes sense, and you have both, then the contradiction can come together extremely well.

  4. you can have both unity and variety by have a topic/ theme: lets say nature, and have varitey by different types of nature pictures: like trees, flowers, beaches, mountains, ect. or you can edit them differently: black and white, high/low contrast, ect. they can complement each other because they are different but still have something in common. you can cope with contradiction by looking at the things the pictures have in common and yet look at how they are special because they have differences that make them one of a kind. red and green stand for unity and variety because when looking at a bunch of photos somethings stand out more than others. but you can still tell that there are differences in the photos.

  5. A way I can show unity and variety is taking pictures of something that involves them both, if I knew how. Its too early for me and this is a tricky question but would complimentary contradict supplementary? hmmmmm....

  6. You can show both unity and variety by making the color schemes the same yet using different kinds of pictures. Or you could do the opposite and use different colors but make the photos look different. My pictures have alot of difference and a little matching.....idk how else to answer this sooo yeah

  7. I show unity in my portraits because they are all young adults i am photographing and they are portraits. I made it a variety by taking different angles, different edits, outside different settings and inside different settings. This Red and green contradiction is easier to look at then to explain with words, i see it as all my photos are of people but they are different people doing different things.

  8. one can show both unity and variety by thinking of one common theme amongst the entire set of photos, such as a theme of high contrast. All of the photos would have high contrast but be of different people, objects and angles. Coping with the contradiction is simple if the theme is one that one enjoys and is able to do, red and green are unified among the theme of a color but are varied by which color each is. Songs and artisits also have this unity and variety by each song having different lyrics and components, but the artist`s songs are tied together through one genre.

  9. You choose a subject that maybe isn't so specific and take as many pictures of that subject as possible try to edit them differently to create breathe (or diversity) through them all. Honestly, this question if real confusing Lawls so hopefully I'm giving you a good answer.. AnYwAyS.. Photography and music are the same in that aspect because you choose a genre of music (subject)but create different songs (which create unity).
