Message Board Topic: Urban Beauty

Berenice Abbott, Eugene Atget, and Henri Cartier-Bresson are known for presenting the urban, modernist environment with the same care and admiration as others have treated the landscape, the portrait and the natural world. Many have called this finding "beauty in the ugly" or in other words, representing something that we traditionally see as unattractive in ways that are attractive. How does the artist do this? What ways can you find beauty in the ugly? What makes something attractive? What makes something beautiful?

  1. the ways that you can find the beauty in the ugly is puting something beautiful in a bad enviornment. for example, you can put a flower in the trash can with rotting food, but people would notice the beautiful flower. beauty is in the eye of the beholder so that means that anyone can find something beautiful in art work if they wanted to. there are a lot of different types of attraction, physical, personal, emotional, ect. in a photo all of these can be applied. it all depends on the person on whether or not they find it attractive. what makes something beautiful is the out look on how someone views something. there is ugly in everything but the beautiful will always show through some how.

  2. Artists make unattractive things attractive by taking the pictures from different angles. They also can edit the pictures too. You can find beauty in ugly by looking for little things that make the ugly pretty. For something to be attractive and beautiful it just has to be real and taken with looooove.

  4. The artist may represent something not so beautiful in an attractive manner by using different angles and views. Beauty in the ugly can be found by making final edits or angles of pictures focuses that may have beauty in a not so nice enviorment. Something is attractive when it catches the artists eye or the view and beautiful when it causes the viewer to continue to look and wonder.

  5. I think it depends on what type of person you are. Some people can look at a rose and find it beautiful, while others think coffee stains are more appealing. You can never really tell what's attractive to someone else.

  6. I think that beauty is in everything hence finding the beauty in the ugly. I think that anything can be attractive in its own way and anything has beauty inside it, not just nature or people.

  7. Being an artist gives you the abilty to look at things in many different ways, and you can show people through your art work the different way you look at things, how you can find beauty with light, shapes, and hard lines oppose to s curves and natural light. i believe its the way you look at the world and how open minded you are, and the viewer, and that has clearly changed as the years have gone by. Natural beauty is being cut down and modern building have been put up in their replace...

  9. Before architecture wasn't looked at as beautiful. Rusty metal was not a "beautiful" thing but natural disaters were because they were made from nature. Now architecture is looked as a beautiful thing. Natural disaters can have an ugly effect on things but the beginning of one is magical.
