Message Board Topic: Artistic Theory

Other disciplines like science, psychology, anthropology and sociology use a theory system. This means there is an initial premise or idea which guides the work. The standard system works something like this: 1) observations of the world inspire an idea, 2) a theory is constructed (this is a hypothesis or statement), 3) the theory is tested through practice or study and 4) the theory is solidified by combining the initial observations, hypotheses and studies in a single, succinct statement.

Artists use a similar mode, such as the futurist or surrealist manifestos. Describe in your own words a theory exhibited by: 1) current artist(s), 2) past artist(s) or 3) yourself (make sure to include the type or movement you follow).

  1. A theory I use is observing the world. My inspiration is the world and nature and human life, in other words, reality or life.

  2. Well, I guess I had a theory with the grunge theme we used. I decided to take a lot of pictures of random red and orange stuff so I could overlay them on the photos I took for the picture, and it worked especially when I pumped up the colors. So my theory worked.

  4. current artist see something or think of something that they like and take a picture of it or create it. but the past artists didnt have the things that we have, ie. photoshop. so they could only work with what they were give in. i would consider myself a current artist because i have good opprotunities to create a diffent photo with what i am give in. or i can keep it the same. i have a choice to do what i want with my pictures.

  5. A theory exhibited by the artist Alex Pardee I think would be a surrealist because he can make an object into something brootal-looking or like really gory. He shows you what that could look like in his eyes. A theory exhibited by a past artist like Vincent Van Gogh could also be surrealism because he painted the world how he seen it and through his eyes. I'd like to see how it would be to try the futurist side of things because I don't really know what it means to be that & it'd be cool to try something new possibly.

  6. Well my new problem/theory is experimenting with photojournalism, though i have never done this before i plan to set up photo shoots with my friends that i find fairly unqiue, and i want to put them in a place where theyre comfortable so i can capture them as they are. i wanna capture a real life.

  7. My theory would start off by finding an extremely odd thing to take a picture of. Next, i take the picture from a different angle, or straight on. Then I edit it to the extreme. I like using grain or making it look like a drawing, and i like high contrast. Last, i usually overlay the picture with a cool color scheme.

  9. 1) Vintage photos inspire me. Very 50's editing.

    2) I'll create it by taking photos of retro/vitange things, and stuctures.

3)I use levels to edit the different RGB settings. I change the brightness and contrast.

4)I create a unique and interesting twist on old photos. I edit them so they look newer but overlay layers ontop to make them look older at the same time to create some type of contradiction.
