Literacy no longer means the ability to simply read and write. This is not a new phenomenon, for literacy has evolved throughout the entirety of human history. Prior to the invention of the printing press, literacy meant oral tradition – the ability to memorize narratives (such as the Illiad and the Odyssey). When the printing press was invented literacy meant the ability to read and write books, newspapers and pamphlets. Today literacy refers to new media, and incorporates visual, audio, and interactive qualities unseen in any other format. Literacy has changed but has also expanded.
How has the internet made "literacy" more available? How has the term "literacy" changed? What does it mean to be literate? Is this moving in the right direction?
Internet has made literacy because now you can research and even read novels on the internet. To be literate now is being able to understand how to read, write, and understand information that is given to you.
ReplyDeletethe internet made literacy more available because there are many ways you can access things like the news, books, etc. but literacy has changed to the point were we rely on things like computers and phones to help us, and this has made people lazy. for example instead of spelling out whole words people us u,r,y,lol, idk. so this might actually be diminishing literature because sooner or later we might actually just us those abreaviations. literate means you are able to read and write and to be able to understand what you are reading and writing. but right now i believe we are moving in a wrong direction if we are always relying on phones and computers.
ReplyDeleteThe internet has made it more available because everyone in the world can use it - even if you don't own a computer, you can go to places like the library. It's changed because it keeps adding new ways in there. I think it's moving in the right direction.
ReplyDeleteThe internet has made developing literacy easy if i must say, not only are there tools to help you grow and learn available but other people/artists work are viewable aswell. You don't have to travel to see someones work because the answers are on the internet and i think it's an amazing thing :) The meaning of literate has changed alot, when it started it waspoken, then it was read, and now it is the ability to interact with media. I believe the direction has been going in the right way too
ReplyDeleteInternet is makeing literacy more avalible because if you need to learn something all you have to do is Google it. You have a vast range of information that you have at the tips of your fingertips just by typing in a few words. I still think that meaning to be literate means reading books but that's mainly because just lately have they decided to add internet into a form of literacy. Some of the things that you read on the internet though are not necessarily true. So, we may just be feeing ourself untrue information. We all just may become more ignorant than we already are.
ReplyDeleteInernet has made literacy more available by you being able to read books online, and get more information online. The term literacy has changed alot, today literacy is more about technology. Literate means being able to read something and understand it. I think its moving in the right direction because there is more to read these days, therfore there is more of a chance to become literate.
ReplyDeletethe internet has made literacy more available by generating numerous methods of which to reach literary pieces from websites to books online etc. thus changing what lieteracy means by being literate is the ablilty to find and read a piece online or hear and see one being read. Literate means to be able to comprehend a piece of writting and it is moving in the right direction, the direction of the future.
ReplyDeletei was absent, sooo thats why this is late. i kinda forgot about it.
ReplyDeleteyes the internet has made 'literacy' more availible. if you need something you can just go to the computer and look it up, or if you dont have a computer all libraries do so you can still look it up. literacy i think means all a combo of all three definitions. you need to memorize certain things that you read to connect and review further into what you are reading, and it will help you be a better reader. and yes i think this is moving in the right direction, because we are making everything having to do with technology and if you dont know how to navigate the internet, you are screwed.
