Message Board Topic: Designer Toys

Over the past five years, Designer Toys have become a household name in the art world. These toys are produced in limited editions and are collectible. They often borrow from pop art styles and have strong influences from Japanese culture. A popular site, http://www.myplasticheart.com/ , showcases these toys.

Do you think these toys are art? Are they sort of fine art you would see in a museum? Do you think we will see these toys in museums years, and years from now?

The most popular of these toys is Munny. http://sites.kidrobot.com/munnyworld/ You can actually purchase a blank Munny and create your own design. Many artists have gained recognition from winning Munny contests.

    while I would not call this "fine" art, it would be interesting to see a few exhibits showcasing works like this.

    I do believe this is actually art. This gives people a chance to design a toy based on their artistic prference. I would do this, it seems really cool.

    It's art in it's own way. No one can really define anything as art or as not art. Everyone has their own opinions. I don't think they'll show up in "fine art" museum, but they might make it.

    These are a type of art. I dont think they should be classified as fine art though.

    i don't really like this toy at all. it's kind of dumb and i don't like the way any of them look. i don't think they would really be put into a museum, but i guess they could go into some kind of art show.

    I don't know about museums but I don't think these toys are not art. I think they fit better in a design catagory than fine art. But they're still really cute...I want one!

    I think this is sortve a neat art form, but I myself am not really interested in it. I think this might be in museums 100s of years from now.

    i wouldnt call it fine art but its a form of art and that would be really weird if they were showcased.

    I dont consider this art tht should be in a museum. But, seeing what is in the contemporary section of some museums, it wouldn't surprise me.

    i wouldnt really consider this art but i think it can be a creative thing for kids to do. its fun and lets them use immagination.

    I love these! they are so cute and its a really creative way for people to make their own toys or artwork. This is a great way for people of any ages to make their own personal kind of toy because none of them can be the same.
