Message Board Topic: E-Learning

Some high schools have gone to an "e-learning" format, meaning they offer classes online as opposed to face-to-face (traditional school). Sometimes these schools use "synchronous" methods like a live, real-time chat room. Sometimes these schools use "ascychronous" methods like Discussion Boards, Posts to a Forum, and/or turning in assignments.

What benefits do you see of this kind of system? What challenges?

K12 http://www.k12.com/ uses an online method of schooling. Do you think you would enjoy attending a virtual school? Why or why not?

  1. This can prove very helpful for people who can not leave their homes or don't have the time to go to classes, though I would prefer face-to-face classes.

  2. I like this idea of having an idea of having online classes the only challenge is people cheating and stuff

  3. I guess the benefits would be that you could stay more focused considering your friends won't be around you all the time. The challenges would be to probably not get off track & going on other websites that won't even have anything to do with school. I wouldn't like it, because it seems boring.

  4. I think I would like learning like this, but I think it would be harder. I would rather learn with a teacher in a class room because I wouldnt get distracted as easy, and it waould be alot easier to learn.

  5. I think it is just another way for the US to be lazy! the reason we have these schools is cause people would just be able to ditch it more easily!

  8. This does have some benefits, but i believe that this is a way to accept social awkwardness. people need some face-to-face class time

  9. Im a little on the fence about this because on one hand its just the world moving forward in life. but on the other hand i feel like you wouldnt get the full experiance or learning that you would in real school. And people would get fat!

  10. I think this could work for people who can't make it to the classes for whatever reason. But sometimes face to face is better so you ca n understand things better.

  12. i think this would suck because most kids would end up not taking the online classes. if we have truency problems alot now imangine what would happen if we were at home and had to do school work on a daily basis.. i dont think this would happen.

  13. computers give a lot of info and you can do all sorts of stuff on pc's. theyre a lot of fun in my opinion. and i like working with tech. but other than that hands on work is also just as important if not more than technology.

  15. This method almost completely eliminates social learning. Learning in highschool about social action and reation is equally as important to classes. It would be a lot harder to work in a group this way wouldn't it?

  16. this could beneifit students who are bullied, or cant work welll with others. the only challenge you would have is if you didnt have self motivation.

  18. This online learning could benefit sick or homebound kids alot but, the online takes out the human factors. Like understanding each others personalities and getting to know your teachers besides on a forum or a chat room. Kids wouldn't be able to interact with others their age, which isn't a healthy environment for younger children and middle school kids, that need to interact with their peers in person, not just on a computer.
