Message Board Topic: Art Education

Is ART important? Do you think schools should offer art classes to students? What if a school cut art from its curriculum, how would this impact students?

"The future of art education is indeed in jeopardy due to the large budget cuts across the country. Along with a greater emphasis on core curriculum, high stakes testing is threatening the art programs in all too many school districts. Also, as was pointed out earlier in the site, in many cases parents are ignorant of the proposed budget cuts until it is too late. Part of the answer then is to raise awareness across the country on the value of an arts education. It is hoped that this site does indeed contribute to raising that awareness and promote further research by those who visit it. There are currently many foundations that are working hard to raise money in support of the arts in schools. The National Endowment for the Arts is just one of many that are working for this great cause. (For more information go to www.nea.gov)"

What do you think about cutting art? What can we do to stop it?

  1. I'd be extremely dissapointed if something in the Arts was cut. I'd acutally be pretty P.O'd. I'm not sure of what there is we can do to stop it except declare the importance. But, how far will that go?

  3. i think art classes are important because if thats what a kids intrested in they should be able to pursue that. if they were to take out art clases they should have to take out cooking, child development, and other classes you get chose from.

  4. I think cutting art brings us one step closer to a Farenheit 451 type world. It's insulting to human intelligence. Visual symbols are one of the most basic, maybe even the first way, in which we learn to communicate. Without art all forms of entertainment become void. We can stop this by teaching kids early on in what ways art is foundational to our lives.

  5. Art curriculum is important because it teaches kids creativity and it makes them think just as other classes do. How are students supposed to express themselves otherwise?

  6. I think art is a good thing to have in school because you have kids that want to pursue their education and maybe make a career out of art and some kids who have an artistic talent that just want to take advantage of it. Cutting art would make kids mad and would be pointless.

  8. i believe that art is a necessary for students to let their own creative side out or have a fun class in all the other lame highschool classes we are forced to take. i dont think it should be taken away from us because then those who like taking art classes are missing out, also those who want to become better at art will never get the chance to become better. to stop it we should advertise the fun of art to all students who think they can not be creative, and show them it dosnt matter.

  9. Im not going to say the removal of art will lead to some cultural decay and change, but I will say the daily lives of the people who have made their homes in the many different art rooms will change.

  11. I think art is a very important subject to include in school. The school districts should include art classes in their students cuirculum so they can express themselves. If the school cut art from the curriculm i would hate the school more than i do now and im pretty sure it would impact my learning so dont do it;)

  12. i'd be sooooo mad if they cut art classes. art just makes everyones mind free of everything and they just draw, paint, pictures, anything that relates to art can free the persons mind. we can sue the ppl that think they should cut art classes. damn cheap ppl.

  17. the art classes in school are very good because they help kids learn their skills and what they can and can not do. schools shouldn't cut art because the students need to know what they are good at.

  19. I hate the idea of cutting art from schools! As a student that has been in art since freshman year and done many art related clubs and activites such as the musicals, plays and choir here at the school, cutting art would get rid of any chances that I would have of getting an art scholarships because I wouldnt of gotten the art lessons and help I needed to improve my skills! My sister is also in band and cutting the art programs would also cut one of her ways of gedtting a scholarship as well. Parents really need to hear our voices when we are saying we need art classes to stay. I dont think I would of made it through my freshman year without having my art foundation class. That class let me be myself and express myself in a safe and creative enviroment(:
