Message Board Topic: S-Curves, Why or Why Not?

S-Curves are elusive, interesting and eye-catching. Why? What is it about the S-Curve that draws the attention of the viewer? Furthermore, why are s-curves so intimately tied to the female form?

For the most part, art historians and artists have identified the s-curve in the female form, but not in the male. Is this a bias of a male-dominated discipline for centuries and centuries? Is it because males establish the rules and are (for the most part) attracted to the female form? Or is there something inherent in the female/s-curve that is beautiful?

Think of examples of non-female s-curves. The fact that non-feminine s-curves exist; does this prove that there is an inherent beauty not tied a previously male-dominated field?

  1. S-curves are interesting because they are natrual and they show up in almost everything. S-curves are passionate so people like them, and s-curves show up in females more than males because women have more curves. I just think female s-curves are more intimate and pretty, and males dont relate to them as much. Men are more rough and dont make as good as s-curves...i guess..

  2. I dont think it had anything to do with males establishing rules or anything.I believe men can have s curves also, maybe not as strong as womens s curves because of the different body form of men and women. S curves are so interesting I think because of the different lines your eyes follow

  3. the reason why when people think of s-curves they resort to the females body is because they are born with more curves. we were created differently. we were created to be able to bear and take care of children which makes even more curves and more attracting to the body. yes men still have a good body and have curves but they are not more definded. you cant see them as much as you can on the female body. there is alot of s curves other than the body, there are bottles, animals, and some other things but you dont notice them as much because they are not as beautiful as the actual human body. its not bias, it is just what humans find beautiful, which is more humans.

  4. hmmmmmm, I think why we see more s-curves on women because the female's body is so delicate & seen as such a beautiful peice of art that we don't really notice it in men because their not really seen as 'beautiful' their just kinda there, if you catch my drift.

  5. I think S-Curves do attract to the female form more then the male because all females are beautiful and all females have different forms but S-Curves are'nt just in the female form. I think they can be in animals like a snake for example. It may not be as beautiful but its still an S-Curve. I think males can have an S-Curve just because their human form is not really any different then a females form.

  6. I think S-curves are so eyecatching because the eye usually follows certain lines. People are more attracted to things that the eye follows, it's interesting. I think they're tied to the female form because females usually have an S-curve to them. Some examples of non-female s-curves could be a snake, or maybe even a flower.

  7. i dont know when females became a symbol of sexuality but the typical gender roles are made by men and most men like women and like looking at them naked, therefore s-curves, which are all over females would be directly connected to intimacy. if ya get me. i honestly dont have a promblem with this because im not a femenist. (and i cant spell) i think that the s-curves that are on other things show that beauty can come from something other then a female body... i think everyone should stop being perverted. yup C:

  8. s-curves are eye-catching because they are a focus point for the viewer, where their eyes are automatically drawn to. s-curves are so interesting because they are unique and at times the main focus of a piece, such as a females form, where the normal curves of her body are.no this is not a bias for males and not based upon female attraction, it is because the natural flow of a women`s form is with the s-curve and has a particular beauty. i am not sure about the last question, so i am clueless on how to answer it really, i dont think this may be completely true but i can see where one may think in this sense.

  9. s-curves are more used for women, because woman have more curves than men. i think the that because men had more say in what we did, that they used females.

  10. Females are more "curvy". Which is why it's a lot easier to see s-curves in women. I'm not doubtful that males have s-cuves. I'm sure you'll be able to see them if you look close enough. From the top of their eyes to the bottom of their cheek. I don't think it's baised. It's not like we frown upon male s-curves. We just use women to represent it more because women are more appealing.

  11. sex is such a huge part of our pop culture. every where you turn, it's there. SEX SELLS. if you look at a man naked, its more often than not, less apealing then the soft curves of a woman. I don't care if you're straight, gay, or confused, a woman's body is soft and fluid and sensual and just more beautiful than a man's body which is masculine and angular.

  12. S-Curves are tied to the female form because females tend to have the appealing curves that create an “s-curve”. I think the s-curve has been identified in the female form as opposed to the male form because the structure of man is different. Women are more delicate and weak, with softer edges. Men tend to be larger, having larger, stronger bones and defined muscles that make it difficult for them to possess such curves. Even non-female things that have s-curves are still feminine-related, such as things in nature, like plants. Plants are delicate, weak and soft and often times beautiful, similarly to the female form.
