Message Board Topic: Conceptulization

Conceptualization – a tool for artists

In order to create something you must first imagine it’s existence - you must see it form in your mind's-eye. This can be difficult to do, and requires some practice. The more you "pretend" the better you will be at picturing things in your head. Michael Jordan once said the reason he was so accurate at shooting free-throws is that he imagined the ball going through the basket and then it would…

Hermann Rorschach was a early 20th century psychologist and he developed an Inkblot Test which evaluated people's sanity based on their ability to conceptualize. The way it works is: the psychologist asks the patient what he or she sees and based on a predetermined list of answers the psychologist can analyze the patient.

Look at the below inklbot - what do you see?

Do you think tests like this help people conceptualize? Do you think they could be used to test sanity? Do you think they are useful for artists? Why or why not?

  1. i see two dogs, or a jesters hat, or a spider. i dont think these tests can test sanity. i do thnk they are useful for artists because it helps artists think of things.

  2. In the inkblot, I see a cockroach in the middle...a bird on each side of it. I can also see a boot. I don't really know if it can help conceptualize or test insanity - it's just a blob of ink. It could be possible, considering what our minds can get from it.

  3. i think this just shows what people create in there minds. i dont think this would be good with evaluating anything because you ask them to find something in the picture, there for telling them there is something in there. everyone is going to see something different but that doesnt mean that some people are going to be crazy just because they see something different than me. there is no way to show who is a little more out there than others. it is just a ways that peoples minds work. and they all work differently. people will come up with different solutions for this. what they create in there head has nothing to do with there state of mind.

  4. In this I see two wolves or a two dogs, two birds sitting on a branch, a cockroach in the middle, and a lady to the left under the dog or wolf. I think tests like this cant be used to test sanity because what if I see something a so called sanity person sees to, does that make me insane too? I think that these tests can help artists because whatever they see could give them an idea for their art.

  5. I see a scorpian crawling under something, and i see a butterfly, and a mask. I think tests like this can help people conceptualize. They might be able to help test sanity if someone see's crazy stuff, but i don't think it'd be accurate because everyones mind works differently. They could be useful to help spark your imagination.

  6. i see dogs at the tops of the photo looking out at different angles and views and also a bug of some sort in the middle. i think that these photos can help people conceptualize and can be used to test sanity depending on what each individual sees. Yes they are useful for artists to help express and witness emotions

  7. I see birds in flight, an insect with pinchers in the center, and a devil looking fox elephant thing haha but i dont see how this could tell you that you were crazy, maybe if you hallucinate while looking at them. i think they could inspire an artist if they are feeling blocked because your mind as an artist can pick out pictures and maybe lead to other ideas :)

  8. I see a bat & a bug. I don't think that it could test insanity. Just because someone doesn't have the same answers as you doesn't mean that they're insane. They're all just random spotches that were thrown onto a blank piece of paper. So, who's to say the appropriate responces to what you see? Yeah, we did a project in summer school with this and made inkbots. Arts are the ones that have to create the inkblots in the first place.

  10. I see two birds on the sides and a butterfly on the inside. I think these are very useful for artists because they can test their level of creativity by trying to find what is in the image. It helps them visualize what is not there.
