Some indigenous peoples believe that if you take their photograph you will “steal their spirit.” Their name and their image are so interconnected to their identity, that they are actually one in the same. This means if you say or know their name you have a certain amount power over them. And if you take their image you have even more power over them.
How much do you think your image is tied to who you are or how you define your identity?
Why do you think these people feel this way about their image?
Are there similarities to how we feel about our own personal image?

it all depends on what stealing is. if they are taking your work, editing it, and then calling it their own, then yes you are stealing a part of them because they put so much working into their art work. and then having someone edit it and make it there own? that would hurt. if someone did not know your name and they take your art and then they get famous for it then that would hurt on so many levels. i know if someone took one of my poems, songs, ideads, stories and clamed them as their own i would be angry and sad. no one would believe me that it was my work. and that might be why artists feel this way about there work. it is apart of them because they put so much into it.
ReplyDeleteI think your image of yourself doesnt really show all of who you are, it just shows what you look like and however the photo is taken and edited. I think people might feel that way though because maybe there very personal about their image and think that looking at someone you can figure out who they are, eventhough I don't think thats possible.
ReplyDeleteMy image is tied to my identity...but I wouldn't go that far with it. I don't really care much about my image, it's important, but not too much. People might feel that way because they think their image is their soul. A lot of people also judge by image and how people percieve thmeselves.
ReplyDeleteWelllll, since i already express myself alot through my clothing and the way i look i think it defines me somewhat. i think it shows im a little different, and i dont really care about what the haters have to say hahahahah >:) but anywho i think these indigenous people are really connected to their look because their markings are who they are and they do not want anyone else to look like them, im not really sure why they think the camera steals their soul but if your look is your soul and someone photographs your look then they are photographing your soul, and taking it home... if that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI think your image is tied to who you are because in pictures depending on how you look and what your doing, it can represent you. People can feel this way about an image because sometimes images can be really powerful.Thats all i got today..
ReplyDeletei think that my image is a dirrect reflection of who i am.. im all over the place. one day ill look grungey the next girly. fashion is an art. it's expressive and shows what you think of yourself.
ReplyDeletei think that depending on the photo an artist can be tied to a photo as who they are and define them because it is in their point of view and the artist takes the time to capture that moment, which is why artist feel this way. Yes there are similarites because once something is "ours" there is a personal connection, as in horders.
ReplyDeleteYou're only tied to an image for so long until you change your look. People are changing their appearance all the time. After a picture is taken of you though you'll never get the same one; Your hair gets longer or you cut it, you dye it, you're not wearing the same makeup, your pose is different, etc. So if someone does "capture your soul", don't worry because you'll get it right back.
ReplyDeletei think your image is how people recognize you from everyone else. i think they feel this way because they value their identity
ReplyDeletei dont think so. peopl take embarrasing photos all the time and dont care.
